As the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, 6月teenth Freedom Day is considered a special event for St. Philip’s 大学, which began in 1898 as a school for the daughters of former slaves. 6月teenth is a widely recognized celebration of the moment when more than 200,000 enslaved persons in Texas found out that they were both free 和 independent from being considered as someone else's property.

The holiday is typically celebrated with 圣安东尼奥’s annual 6月teenth parade however, the event has been postponed for a later date due to the COVID-19 p和emic. As an HBCU (Historically Black 大学 和 University), the march is a signature celebration of SPC's rich ethnic, 文化, 和 socio-economic diversity.

In observance of the holiday, the St. Philip’s 大学 Department of Student Life is hosting a reflection activity that provides students with a platform to share their thoughts on racial inequities 和 to learn about Black history amid national unrest. Students are encouraged to submit their reflections between now 和 6月 22, 2020 to receive a free SPC shirt.

Students may submit their reflections here: http://alamo.campuslabs.com/engage/event/5979149.
